Re: [RC] help w/ mystery ailment - heidi

Please Reply to: Lauretta tikitiki69@xxxxxxxxxxx or
ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx ========================================A young
man who boards the same place that I do has a horse that is having a
weird recurring problem. The horse is an old QH (about 38)gelding that
will simultaneously have a swollen sheath and swollen fetlocks. He has
had a vet take a look at him and they are baffled. Took blood test but
no type of xrays or ultrasound (for leg issue). Both problems happen
the same time, and then go away at the same time as mysteriously as they
started. It happens every couple of months. The horse is a retired
pasture pet, and does not have much exercise (gets turned out in a round
pen by the owner once or twice a week) but nothing more; used to be a
barrel horse in earlier years. Any ideas? The owner does not have a
lot of money to spend on vet tests, and is kind of just ignoring the
problem at this point and waits for the symptoms to recede again each
time it occurs as he can not afford to have more tests done. The horse
never seems to be in any type of pain outwardly or lame from the
swelling, but as it is not my horse I don't observe it enough to really
say that 100%. Has anyone ever seen this before?

Consider a dirty sheath. When the sheath swells, a sedentary older horse
is also more prone to stock up, which may appear to be "swollen fetlocks."
