[RC] tying-up - Ridecamp Guest

==========================================

I also had a tying up occur, confirmed by muscle enzyme levels. I had been
feeding same diet for years and my horse was fit. I am in a boarding situation,
so it's harder to make changes. My vet recommended no alfalfa. (We are at a
barn that fed straight alfalfa). I had been feeding one extra flake of oat at
night. So, she now gets grass and oat hay, beet pulp (always did feed that), an
LMF grain supplement specifically for horses on grass diet, corn oil, and a
Vit-E, selenium supplement. Horses that tie up need to be on a high-fat, low
carb diet according to studies. Rice bran has been recommended, but not by
endurance vets, so I stayed away from it. I would definitely not plan on a 50
so soon. So far, 10 months later, no further problems. Good luck.
