Re: [RC] [RC] light western saddle - Laurie Durgin

Actually its the thigh! I believe. I am 5'6 around 144, and ride in an 16" western. ;0) I think if the saddle seat is flatter you don't need as big a saddle. He could try a 17"--we have a Fabtron someone gave us, that fits our horses and hubby who still needs to work off more lbs. but he is 6'1 and around 240 (hasn't rideen though since he was 225, and he needed the 17"....

An EIGHTEEN inch western saddle? That's HUGE! When you have a particular tree and add an inch on the rider's seat it makes the entire tree longer. I borrowed some trees from the saddle company and the 16 inch seats were way too big for the Arabs in my field. They were big evenfor a large QH. A 14" tree is what I use partly for that reason, along with getting the leg angle right for short legs. My rear could definately use 15".

I also recall reading that a man's butt is smaller in proportion to overall size, so whereas the average woman may need 15" a much taller man might use a 14.

I am possibly looking for a saddle for my husband- ideally it would be
a western saddle that would fit a wide horse and that comes in an 18
inch seat. The lighter the better. Any ideas?
