Re: [RC] Rider weight - heidi

In the latest issue of EQUUS there is an arcticle on the latest study
which suggests that horses have actually been carrying too much weight.
It says the traditional 20% ratio is too high and 15% is probably a much
healthier rider/tack ratio for the horse. The study was done evaluating
aerobic ability on the flat v. an incline. Further studies are
forth-comming, but this could have a significant impact on the horse
industry, particularly racing as it came just at the time that the
jockey's union is patitioning for higher weight allowances.

There is considerable difference between carrying weight for anaerobic
work such as racing, and carrying weight for aerobic work such as
endurance. I'd be curious to know what parameters they looked at to
determine how much weight is too much...

Heidi
