Re: [RC] small horse/ not so small rider - belinda romanuski

I have debated this issue for myself. My main trail horse is 22 years old.
He is a retired Standardbred and stands 15.1 hands. I weigh between 180 and
185. My saddle weighs approximately 25#. So that makes it to be 205 to
210#, plus any other items (water bottles, saddlebags, etc.) that we carry
with us. He does not appear to have any trouble, has never been lame, and
has never had any back soreness. I read in a John Lyon's magazine that
anyone whose weight + the weight of tack was 200# or more should not ride
older horses. Than I also heard that a horse should not carry more than 20%
of their weight. My standardbred is in great weight, but only goes about
925#, this would make the total weight he could carry 185#. I cannot say I
totally agree with this. I would not let an adult on him who did not know
how to ride. Dead weight is harder to carry. Maybe there should be more
attention to the ability of the riders to ride with a "light" seat, rather
than the weight of the rider.
