My horse also has these. They came on "overnight" also but he had no other symptoms with them. I assumed they were "windpuffs" to give them a name.  I didn't know that windpuffs were not oblong :)  He was never off or had evidence of injury, heat or swelling.  They didn't occur during a time when he was working hard either. 
 
My horses are turned out 24/7 so I cannot imagine how they occurred. He has had them for about a year. I never notice any real change, bigger or smaller.
