Re: [RC] Skito Pad - Laney Humphrey

The most common cause for a saddle pad to exit out the back is bad saddle fit. Since you're using 2 pads, you are also really riding the pads and not the horse. There might be too much slippage between your various layers: horse/dixie midnight, dixie midnight/skito,skito/saddle. Check the fit of your saddle on your horse without any pads so make sure it is good. If it is, the problem might be the slick leather undersides of your saddle panels that don't give the pad anything to stick to. The way your horse moves may also contribute - you've got the saddle anchored with the breast collar but the pads underneath are free to slip and slide around, especially if your horse's conformation wants the saddle to be in the pocket behind the shoulders. You might be placing the saddle up on the withers and shoulders, which is too far forward but which looks right to a lot of us, and then artificially keeping the saddle there with the breast collar. In the meantime, the horse's build wants to put the saddle further back but the only thing that can slide back there is the pad. Once it's there, there probably isn't much holding it down, especially if your saddle bridges, so it just continues to scooch out the back.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to keep the Skito Pad from coming out the back. I ride with a Dixie Midnight pad under it in an english saddle. I have tied it to the breast collar and under the billits but it keeps shifting. I have picked these up on the trail before from riders in front of me so it isn't just me.
