The theory behind the exit CRI is to catch something brewing that maybe didn't show up in the check. There has been discussion from time to time here as if this is necessary.

At one ride we decided to do a little study. When the horses were going out we took a quick pulse by at the out timer on all the riders that would let us (all of them did) after each check and recorded it. The only ones that were in the 50's were the horses that trotted up the the timer. The rest were in the 40's. What we got was several pages of boring data. So in reality I am not sure how necessary it is. I know that the one vet that used to do exit CRI's in this region is no longer doing them. I asked him why and he said they were a waist of time since the horses that passed the first check, always passed the second.
