Re: [RC] Mud and cedar - Barbara McCrary

This sounds very much like a product we produce from redwood bark, only we
call it "gorilla hair". It helps with the mud, but it's not a cure.

Subject: [RC] Mud and cedar

In the Northwest we used something called "Hogs Fuel", which is created
from
the bark of cedar trees at a cedar mill that they remove prior to milling.
It is worthless for anything except footing but it is exceptional for
that,
since it is nearly waterproof, very resilient, and very long lasting. It
has
the consistency of shredded wheat, lots of fibrous mats and chunks. I had
a
dump truck load delivered into a large paddock and spread it about 1 foot
deep. It kept the horses up out of the mud, even though there was water
and
mud directly under it. It's quite cheap, but transportation costs limit
it
to near the vicinity of a cedar mill.
