Re: [RC] Embarrassing moments in horse names - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

Names are always problematic. I remember a beloved English teacher in California who named her daughter Rana, a perfectly respectable Arabic name that means "frog" in Spanish and a good French friend in Alexandria whose children went to the French school with mine. His name was Yannick, pronounced Ya-neek, nice name, except that in Arabic it is the command form for the common verb to procreate. <G> He had one hell of a time for four years. Most of us called him Yan to save him the embarrassment. Here Moza is a cut of meat (part of the leg, but I'm vegetarian), a banana, and a very hot babe...take your pick. Who knows what it would be in Italian?

Before naming anything here, I have to check with several multilingual friends or my daughter who will not just know the words but is sure to know all the rude ones.

the possbility of tickling the funny bone (pun intended :P) of someone who

Vandal, but he grew so fast... When it came time to do his papers, I wanted
to combine his mother's name, Suzzanne, with my sweetie's last name, Minion,
and came up with Minnazze Wiid. A couple of years later, I got a short and
succint email from some guy in Italy: "Viva la Minnazze!" Not knowing what
he was talking about, I googled the word and got five hits, all in Italian,
all of great big wimmin with great big, bare butts. Now, Wiid does have a
pretty substantial butt for an Ay-rab, but he sure ain't no woman. These
days, his name is the butt of a more than a few jokes among those who are
privvy to the gaffe. Sigh.
