[RC] understanding mares - Jonni Jewell

k s swigart posted:>>>It might be interesting to note that despite the fact
that geldings
predominate as starters in endurance rides (even the Duck's rides) that
11 of the 13 Gold Medal XP horses (those that do all the XP rides with
the same rider in one year period) are mares (well, two of the 11 are
mares that have done it twice). And one is a stallion.

Geldings are SIGNIFICANTLY under represented.

This gives some credence to the idea that mares might be better at
taking care of themselves and not allowing their riders to push them
beyond their ability to recover.<<<

Or, maybe it had nothing to do with the inability of the geldings to do so,
and that it just happened that the mare owners were the ones that were able
to get to ALL the rides in one years time. That in itself is a task.(and
shoot, what is the ration of male to female RIDERS??? <wink>) To balance
this out, I'd like to know genders of every horse that attended every ride
for the Gold Medal XP series, and happened to get pulled a day, or not be
ABLE to go one the next day. Just saying more mares did so more often,
again, is not giving any pure statistics until we know what the genders were
that tried, but failed......
