RE: [RC] Understanding Mares/ Horse deaths - Catfish Daniels

Hmmmmm...Well, I have one gelding and one mare. My gelding undoubtedly
takes awesome care of himself at the rides. He sees water - he drinks
it. He sees food, he eats it. He feels like slowing down even though
other horses are pushing him, he'll let me know that he's a bit tired.

My mare on the other hand, different story - complete opposite. Fluke?
- don't know. In my case, however, my gelding definitely takes better
care of himself than my mare.

There is a testable hypothesis here.

Hypothesis: Mares take better care of themselves than geldings at rides.
Prediction: Horses that die as a result of endurance competition should
be
statistically more likely to be a gelding (corrected for proportion of
starters) than a mare.

Has anyone tested this hypothesis?

Ed

PS. I have owned and ridden both mares and geldings. I personally
prefer
geldings, mostly because I have never had a gelding miss a year of
competition because of pregnancy.
