RE: [RC] hay prices in CA - heidi

Many years ago our hay supplier sold hay by the ton and then one day
started selling it by the bale. I asked why he switched and was told
that he could not legally sell it by the ton anymore unless he had a
state certified scale.

Most of our brokers run their semi trucks over a certified scale and get a
bale average for each load--and then sell it as so many bales per ton.
When we buy it out of the stack, there are several certified scales around
the valley, so if we are buying small lots, we just run our rig over the
scales for each load, or if we are buying large lots, we run a few loads
over and get an average.
