Re: [RC] hay prices in CA - TypeF \(Jackie Floyd\)

I got lucky the last two years. My next door neighbor pulled out his Burger grapes and planted red oats/forage mix. My horses think it's candy. Last year I only got 50 bales and was sorry I didn't get more. This year I got three squeezes and got to leave most of it out for the summer. Got the rest squished into the barn the DAY before it absolutely poured here. I paid $7.00/bale and they're about 90 lbs. I'm hoping to make it through until he cuts the new crop. Probably won't but that was the plan.

The rest of the hay I buy from a broker. Tank is the only one of the bunch who is not crazy about the oat hay. He wastes more of it than he eats, while the other four vacuum every last bit of it up. So he gets rye grass. That costs me $8.50 for the same size bale. Alfalfa ranges anywhere from $9.25 to $10.50. Grassy alfalfa is about the same.

I'm in Lodi, CA.

:) Jackie
