You can power with 2, 6 or 12 volt batteries. A solar charger is good to build uyp the batteries again. If however you are using  a lot of power, you may want to get a generator. Be sure however to get a large enough one. For example, if you are running an A/C, that uses 3k you will want to get at least a 4k generator.
Driving the truck charges the battery. Also on most units, you can plug into to direct electricity and recharge the batteries.

The vet is in a somewhat different situation than a camper.  His truck battery powers his stuff for 20-30 minutes, he then drives to his next call while the truck recharges the battery on the truck.
 
There is no free energy lunch, at some point enough energy has to be produced to cover that used.
