Re: [RC] beet pulp/ultium, etc - Cathy

I've never had any problems with any of my horses getting silly on beet pulp (Arabs and Paints).  In fact, what I like about beet pulp is that it is what you might call a bridge feed, right smack in between hay and grain.  I think that's why people like to use it to put weight on their horses, you can feed more of it than you can grain, getting plenty of roughage and not too much protein.  Actually, my guys are more likely to get silly on senior feed, I suspect, because of the molasses.

I don't have any one in hard training at the moment, so haven't tried Ultium, though I am considering getting it for my endurance mare as I start her back into conditioning now that her son is weaned.  That's why I've been interested in people's opinion of Ultium.

I know that we've had this discussion before briefly, but I am curious if
others have had this experience. Beet pulp and b/c it contains beet pulp,
Ultium, are popular feeds for endurance horses.  Has anyone else found
their horse to be hyper or overly energetic on these items? I had held off
feeding Ultium for a long time b/c I was concerned it would make my mare
silly. I fed beet pulp to her about 2 years ago, on several different
occasions for a couple weeks each time and she was off the wall goofy each
time I did it. Someone suggested that she just felt really good on it. I
think she acted more like an addicted person looking for her fix every time
I went to feed it. So, no beet pulp, ever...
