RE: [RC] GPS mapping - Libby & Quentin Llop DVM

TIm & All:

We use Garmin Rino GPS, because they are also walkie-talkies; I imagine
others are good too. They come with a serial cable for your computer. The
software we used for Leatherwood & some other maps is shareware from Doug
Cox, a retired engineer, http://jdmcox.com/. 'USAPhotomaps' downloads for
free. I sent him $15 and he tweeked the program a little after my
suggestion. The cool thing about the program is that you can view & print
your track either on an airial photo or on a USGS topographical map. The
photos & maps download for free off the internet!!

Subject: [RC] GPS mapping

I'm glad to see this topic of GPS. Currently I'm in
the process of getting a ride setup in North Carolina.
The trails I plan to use are managed by two different
NC gov agencies. So far, neither has said "no". The
majority of the trails are on a State Park and about
8miles are in a Game Lands Area (don't worry, there's
no hunting during the date I'm planning). I've
finally found who to talk with at the NC Wildlife Dept
and they request a route, ride details, and why I need
to use this trail. The last two are easy to explain,
the route map is a little tougher. The Park has a map
available, so detailing my route was easy. I've yet
to find a map for the game land trail. Hopefully this
Wildlife Biologist, who is considering my request, has
a map available with these trails already mapped out.
If not, then I need to figure out how to GPS the
trail. I know the Llops mapped out the Leatherwood
trails with GPS. What unit would I need to do a map
like that? Anyone in the Peidmont or Western NC area
have a unit that could possibly help me map it?
