HI Nancy,
    When my 2 y/o reared and broke my foot in 2 places I got those Blunnies with steel toes: called something like "Women's Work Boots."  They're great and even OK for some short rides.  My shoer says if you're really concerned about saving the metatarsal bones you need to get that sort of "portable steel plate" that some farriers use (the smart ones :-)  ) which cover the foot to the top of them.  They're made of steel: I'd trust 'em to protect and not do further injury.  Sorry you're feeling so miserable.  It's been two years since my injury and my foot's just starting to feel somewhat less weird in the fracture places.  You'll probably heal right up, though.  Best wishes to you for Happy Holidays!
