Many kids I know around camp start out with the 25s. They don't get as tired and are more willing to come back and do it again
I started more kids than I can remember.  They all started with 50's and would do no less.  They ranged in age from 5 to 11 or 12.  Almost all of them are still riding.  My one criteria was no whining and do what Maryben tells you.  Of course they also knew that they could stop at any time (as long as it was at a vet check) and that I would not hassle them.  A rider with thousands and thousands of miles told me once, after he had quit at lunch, "when it stops being fun I stop".  My juniors have all been allowed that luxury and not one of them has ever quit before the end of the ride.....Usually after the ride they are out riding around bareback while their sponsor is near death in the camper.....mb
