Re: [RC] For all you farrier types - Jon . LindermanI am the "Junior Varsity" farrier at my place & trim my daughters horse who is used sporadically with the onset of her teen years, as well as tacking on loose/lost shoes for our other horses. I second the idea of good equipment from personal experience. Cheap nippers are just that......cheap. Get the good ones, as well as a good rasp, and learn how to keep hoof knives (left and right handed) sharp. I have also found shoe pullers helpful for loose shoes that need to be reset. I got those pretty cheap, and have a less expensive pair of clinchers too. Another thought is a couple of Doug Butler videos on simple trimming and shoeing......if it was only was easy as he makes it out to be, but they are short and I found helpful. My farrier gave me a small supply of correct nails for different shoes since some of the boys have steel shoes, others aluminum. I keep at least a set, usually more, of shoes pre-shaped, ready at home & to take to rides, particularly if you have some less than common shoes on your steed like I have. Several times its allowed me to complete a ride when I lost a shoe & was able to give the ride farrier a similar shoes to reset. Remember to bend those knees to spare your back! My only advice is that if you are going to do much trimming at all, invest in a really GOOD set of stainless steel nippers, not just the cheap ones you can typically get from the feed store. They are better balanced, and most importantly, they hold their edge much better, so that you can nip and not have to be a Mega-Muscles to get them through the hoof wall! Also, get a good sharp rasp, and don't feel bad about replacing it when it gets dull. And keep it in a sheath to help prevent it getting dull just bumping around in the tack room or the tool bucket. However, if you get a top-notch set of nippers, you will also find that you do such a better job of nipping that you have a whole lot less left to rasp... :-) Heidi =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
