[RC] Solar heaters - Julie Fuller

A neat idea I came across in "The Horsemans Scrapbook" for keeping water tanks from freezing......

Dig a hole, smaller than the bottom circumference of the tank. Make it deep enough to be below the frost-line in your region. Put the trough on top, and let Nature do the rest!

If you live in an area where it rains enough to make the ground really soggy, line the hole with bricks, rocks, RR ties, whatever, and put the trough over it. It won't matter if the hole fills up with water..... if the hole is deep enough, the water shouldn't freeze anyway.

I thought this was a great idea! And the book, compiled by Randy Steffan is FULL of cool, practical ideas for horse people. You can usually find it at tack stores, or you can order it online. Try bookfinder.com
