Re: [RC] Mules-guardians - Patsy Davis

I own two mules.  Ruby, the younger and smaller one, is quite the guardian.  Sometimes, if it is dark, she will refuse to come in and eat because she suspects something is in the pasture, probably a coyote.  She stands on a rise and snorts and keeps watch while the others eat, unless I physically make her come into the barn.  When I am riding her out through the pastures or woods she  keeps her ears up and does some serious 'sniffing' if things don't seem right to her.  She is constantly watching for something that might not seem right, but she very rarely will spook at anything.   And if she does, 99% of the time is a "spook in place" situation.

I work at Idaho Outfitters and Guides Licensing Board, in the
spring. One of their guides gave them a picture of a mule that
had gotten into it with a bull elk. Apparently this elk was in
a real bad mood and came into camp on a rampage. Tangled with
the mule, and unfortunately they both lost the battle. The
picture is real depressing, it shows the mule impaled, with it
and the elk dead on the ground. This brave mule, may also have
saved some lives.

My horses will also save lives, as long as you can stay in the
saddle while they get the heck out of Dodge.
