Re: [RC] [RC] Riding trails near Vacaville in Calif - Karen Sullivan

Hi Lucy,

That was probably the low-water crossing at Cache Creek, at Cache Creek
Canyon. That low-water crossing is probably county Rd. 40, which goes all
the way over into Lake County, and has a huge network of fire and jeep roads
and a few trails. I strongly would advise anyone against riding up the Blue
Ridge Trail. My daughter and I tried some years ago. It is really more of
a
mountain goat trail than a horse trail. BLM also feels it is not
horse-safe, though
I wish they would put a notice at the bottom with a warning. We got several
miles
up that trail and realized what we were getting into...took another mile
going
up and along it until we could even turn the horses around safely, without
them
toppling off the cliff!!! Before driving out there, one should call Yolo
County
Flood Control to make sure the gate across the road to the creek crossing is
open. They close the gate when the water in Cache Creek is too high........

However, some of the roads should be nice, and the Frog Pond loop is do-able
on horses if you don't mind poison oak!!!

Further up Hwy 16, almost to the intersection of Hwy 29, was a great trail
head
access into the Payne Ranch Cache Creek Wildnerness study area (BLM) called
Cowboy Camp.
BLM is currently restructing their trailheads so Cowboy Camp (the only
winter
access into Payne Ranch), and is looking toward another equestrian access
and possibly
horse camp at another location on Hwy 16 called High Bridge. Both
equestrian groups and
individuals are concenred and about this and bugging BLM for horse access.
IT may not be
until next year sometime....

A great site for a lot of these trails is www. yolohiker.org
Colored topo maps with trails inked in. BLM does not yet have official
trail maps for this area.

The riding in Payne Ranch is incredible. Miles and miles, from rolling oak
woodland with tons of
stock ponds for water, to high ridgetops.....and a few trails down to the
actual Cache Creek. You
could ride out there for a week and not find all the trails.

Karen

A few years back, I looked into a trail that started
off the south side of hw-16 a few miles north of Rumsey.
The trail seemed to go up onto the Blue Ridge and
continue south towards Lake Berryessa.

It was an out-and-back trail that (from the map)
seemed to have limited water supply (which concerned
me for summer riding as the initial climb to get on
the ridge looked like a tough one), but looked to be
interesting. Might be worth a look?
