Re: [RC] Hock injury found today. - Chris Paus

I would hold off on the EWT. You don't want to give a
vaccination when the animal's system already is
compromised. It won't hurt to wait a while. Just keep
it in the refrig.

as for the lameness. I'd sure get a puncture wound
looked at. You want to make sure a tendon sheath isn't
punctured. A vet may recommend a tetanus booster which
is different from the tetanus vaccine in EWT.

Boy, I'm sorry this has happened. Horses keep us busy
and our wallets empty, eh?

She was fine last night. today she was hobbling,
could barely walk.Yikes,
at first I thought it was her back/hip from the way
she was walking. Grade 3
lame. Doesn't want to put any weight on it.
On closer inspection--the inside of her left rear
--at the hock and above
was very swollen, even seeming to have ridges at the
joint. The outside of
the leg and joint did not seem to be swollen. I
looked for an injury. There
is a small gash, scrape. I thought puncture wound--
But there didn't seem to
be a hole and wasn't deep at all.It is above the
joint maybe 4". No lumps or
debris in it. I called may daughter who with 34
horses is used to
lameness-- about should I call the vet or what to do
(beyond my first aid
book..). She asked me some questions and said to
take temp (99.7) . Then to
hose it and do a Furazone sweat. And bandage the
leg below with a pillow
wrap. And give bute.I did the above. And stalled
her. She said if it isn't
better in a couple days to call the vet then. But
didn't think it was an
emergency. She said is it hasn't gone down some by
tomorrow she may drive
over and look at it.
Honey never gets hurt. Only mare. Closed
comfortable herd. In a 2 acre
hill with rocks, roots and mud, they go leaping
around all the time. She
was muddy on one side, like she rolled. I wonder if
the gash is
conincidental, or if she fell and rolled... no one
would kick her, she is
the princess.... and they don't do that...besides it
is on the inside of her
thigh.... There are some branches around...Unless
something got under the
fence, but the donkey ususally lets me know.
(occasionally I have had dogs
dig under).
I have her EE<WE<TET. shot in my
icebox,rightnow, due this
month....Wonder if I should get it or hold off....
