[RC] bitless bridle - Sharlene Roberts-Caudle

My Arab gelding raced for a couple of years then was a
breeding stallion for some years before being used as
a trail horse. When I first began to ride him in a
snaffle he was really nervous, uptight, etc. I
couldn't get him to stand in one place. I had already
tried a good side pull and just didn't get results. I
bought a Dr. Cook Bitless Bridle and I would say that
his level of anxiety, or whatever else it was,
decreased immediately by 80%, or more. The very next
day I went to the same place where I could not get him
to stand still, and he did stand still, relaxed.

Although I didn't do this, the instructions say that
you should first ride your horse in a closed area
because when they feel the bridle without a bit they
may believe they have more freedom than they do and
may try to take advantage of it before they find out
how it works.

The web site is very informative.

I also tried the BB on another Arab gelding who
carries his head too high. It didn't seem to be any
better than the bridle. He has never been raced.

My theory was that the bit reminded my off-track horse
of his racing days, and the bitless was "new
territory" for him and he could relax. So, maybe it's
something to try for off-the-track horses especially.
The noseband must be adjusted fairly tight-one
finger-for it to work. I usually unbuckle the
noseband for him to eat and drink. It's easy to do.
It is supposed to work also as a halter, but I'm
worried that there is too big a loop at his chin and
that he could get a foot through it, so don't rely on
it as a halter unless for tying.

Hope this helps.
Sharlene
