[RC] Cold weather camping - Sharon Hahn

OK, as one of the few fools in Minnesota who sleeps in a tent, I'll put my 2 cents in.  There have been a number of occasions when I've woken up to frozen water buckets on a spring or fall ride.

1.  Get a 0 degree or better rated sleeping bag.

2.  Get thermarest or similar pads to put under your sleeping bag.

3.  Wear a hat, gloves, turtleneck, non-cotton long johns, and wool socks.  The hat and wool socks in particular are important.

4.  Sleep in your riding clothes so you don't have get out of your warm sleeping bag and change into cold clothes.

5.  Sleeping in a small tent will probably be warmer than sleeping in a large tent or an uninsulated trailer.

6.  I like a fleece blanket to tuck around my face.  Often I wake up to find I've pulled it completely over my head.

7.  For really cold nights, or if your sleeping bag or clothes aren't warm enough, use one of those silvery emergency blankets over top of everything else.  They are really tiny and good to keep in your trailer just in case.  They do get covered with condensation as you sleep, though.

8. Dogs or another person will keep you warmer, too.

Happy winter camping!
