RE: [RC] [RC] still having issues... - Laurie Durgin

Check out any "ideas" in your mind whether you or the horse can get hurt. She is AFRAID--she thinks she is going to die there. So you need to find ways to convince her to trust you and follow your lead--. Something scared her and she hasn't forgotten it. You have to reinstill her confidence in what you ask her. Pain usually reinforces the fear.
Small steps over time, just try to get a bit of improvement and drop the time tables.
Figure out is you could be reinforcing her fear--also think what makes her feel safe, or what can you do to encourage her. Maybe leading one step further everyday on ground with encouragement and praise. Maybe following other horses (whose riders don't pressure you) lots of times, then going it alone , with small steps. Maybe more ground work and practice leaving the barn dozens of times in her comfort zone, and slowly increasing her distance. Maybe feeding her out on the trail, maybe coming back and going to work in the ring or tying her for a while to stand. (I once reinforced mygeldings desire to come back , by feeding him dinner after we returned ,letting him graze.I had to change to going to the ring and working 15 minutes or tying him for 15 minutes --but he wasn't afraid , he was being naughty).(But on the same horse I had to walk him from home many a time on the ground in the beginning or past scary places, took him a long time for him to trust me,but he was right I was green too. Now he trusts me more and is older and has more confidence).

I had posted a while back about my horse totally unwilling to go onto the trails where I board her. I'm not sure if it's because she smells Deer or Bear. I can get her up to the trail but not down it-she becomes hystrical snorting, rearing, refusing. People at my barn say she is "playing the game" on me. Someone on this website gave me a soloution to her rearing-telling me to press down on her neckline by the withers. This really works! However it doesen't cure her not wanting to go foreward. This summer she went fine alone.I took a crop with me, I used it and she almost threw me off! She even feels timid when we go with other horses-wanting to stay behind and taking "baby-steps". I'm getting frustrated! :DDD Do you think I should have someone come alsong on foot with a lounge wip? Let me know of any soloutions!
