[RC] Getting a horse to pick it's feet up on trail - Kari Hanes

I've been working with the retired race horse we got this spring. She is a really good trail horse, with a few problems. When going over rough terrain she stumbles. She hasn't went down - yet. I'm getting a little nervous about taking her on my usual training trails - I don't want to be miles from home and have her go down. She has been doing fairly well around our property and the neighbors field. She also has some separation issues with my daughters gelding - it seems they're in love! But I've been working on getting her out alone a lot more and just letting the gelding stay at home and cry. Once we're out of hearing range she settles down pretty good. All of the suggestions I've gotten from my horsey friends are basically ride, ride, ride! Does anyone have any other advice? She is not in a completely flat pasture and doesn't seem to stumble when out with her pasture mates.
TIA
