[RC] horse shoes and pads - Dot Wiggins

When using pads with shoes do you put any substance under the pads? Why, or
why not?
Oakum used to be common, is it around any more?
I know there are new materials used as hoof protectors, which kinds can be
used under pads?
In years past I remember some used different kinds of latex or silicone
calking. Is this being used now? If not why? Was it harmful in some
way?
What kind of pad is used most often, plastic, leather, or ??
Just curious, thanks for any info.
