RE: [RC] Marla's Mystery Ataxia (correction) - Mcgann, Barbara

Kat,

I think we all would hesitate to speak up here when you have had such a stellar
crew of people actually observing the horse, but I think that Maris Ramsey may
be on to something here when she talks about the intracellular salts.

I, too, had a mare that several times was on the verge of tie-up (high CPK's,
etc). After one particularly hard, hot ride, I was going to move her around
the next morning and she acted almost drunk...staggering, seeming to not know
where her feet were, etc. Our vet suggested the intracellular theory. We not
only electrolyted her immediately, but then we put 2 cups of salt in a
free-choice feeder. She DIVED into it, ate it in great chunks, licked the pan
clean. We refilled it, it took about 1 day for her to clean it up, we refilled
it, it took several days that time. Over the course of the next two weeks, I
swear the mare ate about 10 CUPS of salt.

I went back to riding her and doubled my electrolyte regimen and never had the
problem again.

Not scientific, but worth a try???

It's late and night and I did bad math:

...I pulled her from the ride at the 58 mile check (11:15 into the ride,
so an average speed of ~4.9 mph; 9:30 hrs of riding time for an average
speed of 6.1 mph out on
the trail) ....

p.s. My average riding speeds for each leg were:

The first 12 miles in ~1:45 ( 6.8 mph)
12 miles to 34 miles in ~ 3:45 (5.8 mph)
34 miles to 58 miles in ~ 4:00 (6 mph)
