I don't have my school books in front of me right now.  But here is some information that I found online

These all seem like pretty good articles so I hope it helps.

hi ray,  back in june, i rode a kentucky mountain saddle horse.  he was a little bitty thing.  he paced, and i mean a true pace, where both right feet picked up and hit the ground together, then the same for the left side.   quite possibly the roughest riding horse i have ever been on!

with this stepping pace that you refer to, i guess the footfall is more like the paso fino, where each foot hits the ground independently. with the paso fino in gait, one foot is off the ground and three feet are in contact with the ground while the horse is moving.

now, what about a rack?   what exactly is that?   also called a single foot, right?
can you describe that one for me?        ed
