[RC] way of going at canter - Sharon Hahn

My mare does this at the trot when she is getting tired.  I think it helps her get more air somehow.  So your horse might be expending more energy at the canter, and since he can only breathe in synch with the canter, he may be trying to get more air with each breath.  Of course, the sore back theory another ride camper proposes also makes sense.
