I had a pony (13.3h) when I was young and I taught him to stand for me to do that.  I'd leap up, we'd rear, then take off at a full blown gallop.  He was a great pony.  I could not imagine doing that to a horse today.  I keep visualizing the horse kicking out as I ran up to leap -- ouch!

Years ago we had the best little Shetland pony for our boys. One day while
she was in the pasture eating grass, a neighbor boy who thought he was hot
stuff, ran up behind her and vaulted onto her back. We all cheered as she
bucked him summarily off. That is the only time, outside of Gene Autrey
movies, I have seen that mount done.
