Re: [RC] [RC] fear of arabs, mounting - Chris Paus

I teach riding lessons to very beginning students,
adults and children. These are people who have never
put a halter or bridle on a horse, some of whom have
never even touched a horse.

Their teacher is a 8YO Arabian gelding named Zab. Some
of them have heard the stories about wild and crazy
Arabians and are shocked to learn that they are indeed
sitting on and riding an Arabian!

tonight I had my last lesson with a beginner student
who really has progressed to the point where she
doesn't need me anymore except for once in a while.

I rode Zab and she rode her own horse. When I was
packing up to go home, she hugged Zabbie and had tears
in her eyes as she was saying goodbye to him. He got
her started with horses and gave her the confidence
she needed to move on.

Not all Arabians are scary or spooky. They are
sensitive, and some like Zab really tune in so well to
the needs of people and help them build confidence.

Mel, One of the easiest ways to get over the "Arab
fear" is to find
someone, or hire someone that is a good, confident
and quiet rider and go
along a few times on your own horse and watch how
this horse reacts to
ordinary trail situations. I always felt better
about getting on one of
my "greenies" after my trainer had ridden them and
got to see how the
horse reacted to "having it's buttons pushed."

The other thing I am afraid of is Arabs. I have a
lovely purebred Arabian
mare. She came from a show barn so doesn't have any
trail experience.
She's not a spooky mare, has no bad habits...I've
ponied her everywhere
and ridden her with other horses but am so scared to
take her out alone,
and I know that will translate to her. I'm about
ready to sell her since
I can't seem to get past this. This is the second
Arab I've gotten to try
to make into an endurance horse and for some reason
I am afraid of them.
The irony is my Morgan is show bred and can run very
hot, but that
doesn't scare me at all. I've been told I'm a decent
rider but can't get
pst this "arab fear." OK...now go ahead and laugh at
me!
