[RC] Re:Fear - Lucie Hancock

I had a bad experience a few years ago. I don't remember what happened exactly to cause the accident, but my helmet was cracked a few inches up the center of the back. It saved my life. I remember thinking "Oh, good. He's going to settle." and then I woke up in Nancy Gooch's car on the way back to base-camp. My mistake was never having ridden him in the dark during training. I was a "basket case" for a while. What helped me was going back to basics for both myself and my horse. It was a long time before I would ride anywhere faster than a walk or go out on trail by myself. We worked on lateral flexion, one rein stops, backing up a few steps, getting him to yeild to the slightest cues, playing "games" on the trails AND going out on trail at endurance rides, asking friends and granddaughters to ride with me. Going back to the basics is the best way. Now we get out and really go when we want to, or we go slow and that's OK too. I can put my grandchildren up on my gelding and he takes care of them. It took going back to the basics and lots of repetition for bothof us.
