[RC] botulism - was sick horses - A. Perez

This is one of my big reservations about using big round hay
bales. If you bust open a small bale and find a dead critter in
it (not at all uncommon), you pitch the whole bale, no big loss.
But when about getting into a round bale and finding a dead
animal? How much of the bale do you throw out, and at what
cost? Not to mention you may have already fed out quite a bit
of possibly contaminated hay before you even know there's a dead
beasite in it.

"Horses can also get botulism. I went out to feed last night &
smelled that dead mouse smell - sure enough, somehow, a mouse
had gotten into my grain & was oozing body fluids in my 3-way.

The chances are slim, but I'm not going to make my horse ill by
trying to salvage half of a $12.00 bag of feed. I tossed the
whole thing & will replace it."
