==========================================

The results from my mare's bloodwork showed everything normal, except a high
white count. The vet felt this might be indicitive of some form of Potomac
fever, but he felt her symptoms, diarehea, loss of appetite, and depression
point more towards the presence of a bacteria (?) in the hind gut. He said the
name of it...started with a c and sounded kind of like ecoli. He said he had
seen horses with this type if infection exhibit colic like symptoms, but not
the dramatic pawing/rolling/intense pain that accompanies a true colic. Gali
never had those colic like symptoms at all, but her mucus membranes were bright
red. Today, after 3 IV antibiotic shots, she is doing much better, and her
mucus membranes are a healthy pink color. His theory was still that she got
this bacteria out of drinking puddles- since the bacteria is in the ground,
then when it rains the bacteria gathers in the puddle. He has ruled out
Salmonella (thank goodness)I don't know if he's right or not, but have been
pushing him for information so that we could get some type of clue as to if
these horses illnesses were related (caused by some common cause) or totally
random. Dianne also told me that another horse was given a bantamine shot as
well.
