[RC] mares are riding horses - Alice Yovich

Someone recently asked me if I was a mare or a gelding person. I've always said a gelding person, but I've owned way more mare. Now I'm owned by the greatest of mares and we have a great relationship. I can tell when she means no and means it (and should) and she always takes care of me. Sometimes I have to insist that she move on, when I know that she's safe. After 3 1/2 years she's finally starting to believe me. People tease me about my "little mare" (I'm at a dressage barn where my 15 hh Shagya is very small to the WB and TB horses she's surrounded by) but she will go and go. But, she always stops when she needs to stop too.

I'm sure that's not true of all mares (the going till
they drop thing), but thinking that's a "good" thing is a scary thought to me
personally.
