[RC] I'm suprised there aren't more endurance riders in FL.... - Patti Pankiewicz-Fuchsconcerning the endurance it takes to get through all these hurricanes. I live in Indian River County, a place prior to three weeks ago most of you probably had never heard of...but thanks to Frances and Jeane I'm sure you've seen lots of video on TV of my area. 'Course I guess we're due as we hadn't been hit by a major hurricane in 70 years. But two, exactly three weeks apart! Jeesh!
Finances would not allow me to take my little herd to Tampa again so I had no choice but to turn them out across the street in my neighbors open, 5 acre pasture. I was afraid to leave them in mine as it is wooded and was still full of debirs from Frances. I am happy to report they did just fine, not a scratch on any of them. 'Course how the little shetland pony stood up to 122 mph gusts, I have no idea. My old (by Florida standards) cracker house has zero damage as well....a large pine tree fell within 2-3' of my house, deck, washer/dryer shed and horse trailer without touching any of them. Phew!
I am currently looking out my office window (I'm a librarian) into the chock full and swarming parking lot...they're giving out water and it's a madhouse....FEMA and the Army Corps of Engineers are in the lobby doing their thing, too.
But we will perservere.... power was out for 11 days last go around and I'm thinking it'll be the same at least this time. I shan't complain though as I've got window a/c units and a generator to run them, and we're stocked up on beer. Howard! They sell beer in your county? Our county was dry for a week and half after Frances and who knows for how long this time. Now if I can only ride!!! I was planning for a late December coming out LD for my still very green mare (she was broke last March)....if we start riding again (she's only been ridden a couple times over the last two months....vacation..heat...then hurricanes) next week do ya'll think it's still doable??
