Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] Boot preferences? - terry banister

I will chime in to say that my horse has never had shoes and, knock on wood, never had scratches.
I live in So. Cal. and do endurance. I have been using the Boa Boots on hind feet and Old Macs on front (as a test).
The new gaiters for the Old Macs are excellent, and I would consider them a "must." The Old Macs never come off and the traction is good. The gaiters help with debris and really ensure against rubbing that can occur with that inner strap. HOWEVER, I too only got about 100 miles out of the boot before the one fell apart. It looks like they connected the canvas top to the rubber base with leather, and that doesn't last long enough.

The Boa Boots are doing great. The new gaiters with the foot pad really stay in place, and even hold the boot on (if I didn't get the knob locked on installation). No heel rubbing and very little debris. Have not gotten scratches. Ridden a few hundred miles so far, including a two-day 100 with them. Did 20 miles yesterday.

I wonder if Desitin would hurt the Neoprene gaiter?

I have sort >of a love-hate relationship with them. When they work they are great >but when they come off they are a PITA! Mostly they stay on my >horses just fine. I don't really l9ke how they groove the wall at >the quarters but it hasn't caused any major problems. >I just tried Boa Boots this weekend and they stayed on really well >for a fasy and very rocky 12 mile conditioning ride. My horse seemed >comfortable in them. I did have one major problem with them on this >particular horse. He is a very thin, sensitive skinned Arab and sand >got in behind the gaitors and irritated his skin so that he got a >full blown case of scratches by the next morning. I don't think they >will work for him. I'm sure that a tougher skinned horse should have >no problem. >I have tried Old Macs and was fairly happy with them until I rode a >faster, rough ride and the canvas ripped in the back. These boots >only had a couple hundred miles on them so if they can't hold up >longer than that they aren't worth the money for me. >Hope this information helps. >Nancy Sluys > > > > >EZ Boots, Old Macs, Boa Boots... What you like and why? If you've >tried different kinds, what were the pros and cons of >each, in your >opinion? Would it make any difference in your choice if the horse >were barefoot?
