Teach him to hold the foot up himself. Ask him to pick it up and reward him with a pat or scratch or something each time he does that. Ask him to hold it for longer and longer times. Don't you hold it until he can keep the foot up by himself. When he can hold it up for a reasonably long amount of time, then you can hold the hoof itself. The moment he puts more than just hoof weight in your hand let the hoof go.


Right now your colt likely hasn't differentiated between his holding the hoof up and your holding it up. You need to teach him that.
