I realy see this ride as two 25 mile rides in a row.

I haven't done many 50s (I'll be doing a slow 50 at Armadillo too), and I tend to approach them as 4 loops...taking them simply one loop at a time.  My advice is, if you've done relatively quick AERC 25 mile rides (3-3 1/2 hours), is to not try to finish the 50 in twice that time.  Figure on longer.  Remember, when you're increasing the distance, slow down a bit.  I love the way a friend of mine puts it...you're paying for 12 hours, so get your money's worth!  LOL  Figuring on a ride time of say 8 or 9 hours is a good start.  Also, remember that if you've done a number of shorter rides, your horse may be mentally conditioned to think she's done after that distance (they know how far they've gone).  So make sure you give her plenty of time to eat and drink at holds.  And take care of yourself...I tend to fret over my horse and let myself get dehydrated, etc. sometimes.  Oh, and have fun!  :)
