Re: [RC] Endurance topics! - abigail Madden

Karen,

Have you done Chamberlain Creek before?  I did it last year and loved it.  Big hills, and a really big one right at the first part of the ride, but all very doable.  Also, it never really got warm through the day.  It was overcast and misty all morning.  The sun did come out, but it was still so cool that at the lunch break I kept Tiger with a rug on his butt to keep those muscles loose.  The meal was great.......they had good wine, too.  The RM is a really nice gal.  Get there early if you can, as parking gets pretty tight.

Good luck & have fun............wish I was going.

Here's a question for you - after a ride last weekend, three horses
coliced - all were top ten, all fit and seasoned horses, all had great
vet scores all day, no indication of trouble. It was the first rainy
cool day we've had all summer. Lots of water on the trail, in creek
crossings.

*Hi Steph,

It could very well have been weather related. We had a pony that would
colic
with the advent of any weather change. Also, at least here in Calif, we are
currently
having a really radical shift from our temps of night in the 60's and days
in the upper
90's.......we are getting odd frosts at night with horses just starting a
winter coat...but
still quite hot during the day. They may also just not drink as much when
the weather
starts to change.

My mare has fuzzed up alarmingly this past week and was shivering when I
went out
to feed the other day. With her first introduction to a ride this weekend
(Chamberlin
Ck. 30)...I am a bit worried about the heat during the day. As this is her
only ride, I
am not going to clip belly or neck. She will have to deal with it; we will
have to go slow.

However, with this horse I am not worried about water intake or
hydration...she is a chow
hound, drinks well and I have been giving a lot of soaked beet pulp this
week and water
with bran thrown in...she really tanks up. Drive time to the ride is under
2 hours and it
will be relatively cool...

Still remains to be seen how she does....

Thanks for the heads up on non-endurance related topics.
Karen
