Re: [RC] quarter horse neck..now dates - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

Would a bear sh*t in the woods? Our horses will eat date palms from the bark to the leaves and the dates just get inhaled. Of course they prefer them fresh off the trees when they are crisp and juicy, but they will also inhale the soft mushy ones that get sold in the stores, date cookies, and what we call agwa which is what the inside of date cookies are made of.

Interesting, I wonder if my arab would munch on dates?

I have a cookie I make during the Holidays and I usually freeze
some dates. I will try to see if she will eat them.

The Middle East tends to be low in selenium, but it affects horses differently. I have a mare who MUST have a selenium supplement, and I take one too or I have permanently achy muscles. But the others are fine. Arabs in the old days lived on a diet that contained dates and dates are phenomenally rich in minerals, so that probably took care of the deficiency.
