RE: [RC] [RC] Question re insulated metal roofs on barns - Laurie Durgin

I have a pole barn with a metal roof. hhhmmm the insulation would keep the noise down. That was a problem till my horses got used to it--they finally realised it wouldn't kill them. Maybe he was thinking heat build up? I have the eaves under the trusses open, so there is a 4-6 inch space open all the way around(. They are 2x4's on end every 16". We also had a ridge vent, but it leaked during big rains, so we went back up and crimped some metal roofing so the ridge vent was wider. We have dutch doors too and a shed attached.
Just as a note, the insulation can get birds and rats in it. I know of 2 barns and a gymnasium with no sides that ended up with both in the ceiling and then the stuff started falling down. The birds and rats both nested in it. And you can't pressure wash it . Think, fly tirds, those icky black spots....And you want to clean it off....and you can't....

Subject: [RC] Question re insulated metal roofs on barns
Date: Sun, 12 Sep 2004 08:21:59 -0700

I need advice. I am planning to build a small pole barn with a metal roof. The builder says he puts a blanket of insulation with a vinyl backing laid horse-side down under the metal.

Has anyone ever used that kind of roof? Could you tell me the pro's and con's?

We have hot summers here and snow in winter. So I would be interested in heat build up; whether the snow might bury me by surprise while I'm out feeding; and condensation. Most of the barn will be open, run-in shed style, with one closed stall and a tack room.

TIA,

Dyane
