[RC] Why buy from a breeder? - Kristi Schaaf

This whole auction/breeder thread has been quite
interesting. I can say that ridecamp has educated me
(when Heidi and Lif are on, they're ON) so that when
the time comes to buy another horse, I am going to do
a much better job of researching the horse I buy,
instead of buying because he tugs at my heart strings.
I've bought all my horses with my heart instead of my
head (and convinced myself that the potential was
there). Of the three I have now (and love DEARLY), one
has done a lot of NATRC but now has issues that may
prevent him from ever doing 50's, and the other two
are still fairly young (6 and 8) but I've discovered
that they probably don't have the potential to do even
slow 50's. After spending about $2K each on the
younger ones and investing 2 years in LSD, only to
discover that neither one is a good candidate, what
was their true cost when you add in my time for those
two years? (I know, I know, I've learned a lot just by
working with them, and that's a sort of payment). But
I want to do 50's so BADLY. Since I only have room for
three horses, I'm in a bit of a quandry. I don't want
to sell any of them because they are FAMILY, but I
want to do 50's!!! If I had spent more money in the
first place on a horse bred for and/or proven in
endurance, he would be family AND I would already be
doing what I so long to do (50's, if I haven't
mentioned it yet..). Live and learn - I'm trying
anyway. Kristi iluvdez at yahoo dot com
