When a horse's foot is dissected you can see the damage to the coffin
bone from the lack of circulation.  Parts of the bone do die off from
inadequate circulation. candy

Maybe it's my own oddity, being "into" such things--but I've looked at
various aspects of the skeletal systems of some of my former horses after
they've died of old age.  None yet has had damage to the coffin bones,
despite having spent a fair amount of their lives in shoes.

On the other hand, I've sure seen some awful coffin bones come out of
foundered horses who have never been shod a day in their lives--but have
spent sedentary lives being overfed.  I'd wager that lack of exercise and
inappropriate diets do FAR more damage to feet than even mediocre shoeing
jobs...
