RE: [RC] [RC] Circulation to the hoof - heidi

Those
blown out quarters that happen with horses shod all the time are caused
by those nails. It weakens that section of the hoof.

Just one other comment on the "weakened" hoof from the nails, which
probably ties in to the circulation issue. We often have to reshoe prior
to the "normal" 6-week interval--often our schedule requires it, and
sometimes the shoes are worn out. But the main reason is that we get so
much hoof growth that they are simply too darn long if we don't! The
growth rate when the horses are working certainly indicates that they have
good circulation--otherwise we wouldn't be forced to reshoe at 5 weeks to
keep the feet the correct length. The old nail holes are often almost
down to the ground level when the feet are trimmed for the next shoeing.

Which brings up another issue--when the horses are working this much and
have such good growth rates as a result, the terrain we ride STILL causes
more wear than there is growth, which is what necessitates shoeing in the
first place. It isn't that we just love nailing on steel--it's because
they'd be down to nubbins if we didn't...
