RE: [RC] [RC] Speed of Gaited Horses/Mules - RHightshoe - Michelle Fink

I have GPS'd my guy (14.2hh MFT). His regular walk is around 3.8-4, slow
very comfy FT gait is about 4.8+, faster gait (FT toward trot, bouncy!) is
5.5+. His hard trot is really slow compared to an Arab, around 7+ mph. If
he has an extended trot, I have never found it and have only seen it a
couple times in pasture when he's super-jazzed. Fastest I have gotten him
to canter (with much encouragement) is about 15 mph, his preferred canter is
about 7-10 mph.

Sometimes I look down a nice stretch of trail on him and wonder if we're
ever gonna make it to the next corner. ;-) He's so slooooow.

We also have an Icelandic (14hh), his gait speed is slow, around 4.3.
Working trot is 8+, he has a nice comfy working trot and can extend and go
faster in trot. Canter & flying pace are 10+ mph.

Happy Trails,
Michelle
