RE: [RC] shoes impeding circulation-not! - Von Simson, CristianoThe blood is pumped by the increased pressure on the palmar/plantar blood vessels inside the hoof when the horse bears weight on one limb. The hoof expansion is part of a shock-absorbing mechanism to reduce concussion to the limb structures (bones, cartilages, etc.) That is why we should avoid placing nails or clips on the rear of the shoe. The two events happen at the same time, but the hoof expansion/contraction is not pumping blood, the increased pressure inside the hoof during weight bearing is. But given the above, if the expanded hoof contains more volume would that same volume decrease when the load was removed (i.e. the hoof in flight) and therefore cause a pumping of the blood ? Just interested in knowing more. There is pressure on the bottom of the foot when the hoof lands. I suspect that this pushes blood out of the bottom and up along the expanded periphery. Since veins have valves, preventing backflow, when the hoof contracts again when the pressure is removed, that would cause the blood around the periphery of the foot to move on up the veins.
